Government
Alex Correa Executive works with government departments, statutory bodies, regulators, government-owned corporations and public sector-adjacent organisations in Brisbane and across Queensland.
A strong government legal appointment is about more than technical capability.
The right person needs sound judgement, clear communication and the ability to work with discretion inside systems where decisions may involve policy, public interest, risk, scrutiny and multiple stakeholders.

What we look closely at.
Every government appointment has context. We work carefully to understand the department, agency or organisation, the legal function, the reporting lines, the decision-making environment and the stakeholders the person will work with.
We also want to understand what success will look like in the role. The right appointment may need to bring legal judgement, policy awareness, stakeholder confidence, leadership potential, governance experience, or support through reform or increased complexity. Technical capability matters, but it is only one part of what will help someone succeed in a government legal setting.
That context shapes the way we approach the market and the people we recommend.
Roles we support.
Alex Correa Executive supports government and public sector legal recruitment across a range of legal, governance and related roles.
- Lawyers and senior lawyers
- Principal lawyers and legal leaders
- General counsel and heads of legal
- Governance, risk and compliance roles
- Regulatory, advisory and policy-adjacent legal roles
- Selected shared services, operational and management appointments where legal, governance or public sector context is important
Government legal teams rely on people who can work with legal detail, public sector process and organisational context. The right person may need to advise clearly, manage complexity, influence carefully and support senior decision-makers in settings where accountability matters.
How we support public sector legal hiring.
We support the thinking that sits around a strong government legal appointment, not just the search itself.
That may include clarifying the brief, advising on the market, identifying and approaching suitable candidates, assessing suitability and alignment, developing a shortlist, supporting interviews and helping with offer conversations.
We will help you see what the market is likely to offer, where a brief may need to be refined, and whether a different candidate profile could bring the capability your organisation needs.
Why public sector organisations work with us.
Alex Correa Executive brings a long view of the Brisbane and Queensland legal market and a relationship-led approach to recruitment.
We know the obvious candidate is not always the right person for the role, and that a strong appointment is not always easy to identify. Our work is grounded in care, honesty and advocacy for the outcome that will best serve the role, the team and the organisation.
Government recruitment often requires patience, clarity and careful communication. We take that context seriously, while keeping the focus on the person who will be right for the work, the team and the public sector environment.

1. Senior Principal Lawyer (three roles), Administrative Law
The brief
A state government department engaged us to find a senior-level administrative lawyer for a single advertised vacancy.
The challenge
A broad campaign like this can generate a long list of applicants without a clear way of identifying which candidates are genuinely strong enough to progress.
Our approach
We combined job board advertising with network promotion and extensive headhunting, building a shortlist of eight candidates, four of whom were taken to panel interview.
The result
The department made three permanent appointments instead of one, drawing on a previous candidate we had placed years earlier, an applicant who responded to advertising, and a candidate we approached directly from our database.
Recruiting for a government legal team?
A strong field goes beyond who applies to an advertisement. We combine advertising, direct approaches and years of market relationships, so your panel sees the best candidates available, not just the most available ones.
2. Team Leader, Public Law
The brief
A state government legal department engaged us to recruit a Team Leader specialising in public law, an area of practice with a genuinely small pool of candidates in Brisbane.
The challenge
Advertising alone was never going to surface the right person for a specialisation this narrow.
Our approach
We relied on targeted headhunting rather than a broad campaign. Discussions with one candidate progressed from a formal interview process into informal coffee meetings, allowing both sides to properly test experience and culture fit.
The result
The candidate was appointed to the role, demonstrating the value of a patient, direct approach for specialist government briefs rather than a wide net.
Searching in a small talent pool?
When only a handful of people have the right specialist experience, advertising won't reach them. We know who they are, and we take the time to build the conversation properly.
3. Talent Acquisition, People and Culture
The brief
A newly created role within the People and Culture team of a government legal practice required someone with strong talent acquisition experience, ideally with legal and government exposure.
The challenge
Advertising the role generated over one hundred applications. Finding the right fit within that volume required a genuinely rigorous screening and interview process.
Our approach
We looked for a specific combination of strengths: a strong talent acquisition background, experience within a government-owned corporation, and some exposure to legal recruitment.
The result
The candidate appointed brought exactly that combination, filling a greenfields role that had not existed in this form before, and demonstrating our reach beyond lawyer placements alone.
Too many applications, not enough clarity?
A large response doesn't guarantee the right hire. We screen rigorously against the exact mix of skills and experience you need, so you only meet the people worth meeting.
