Principal Legal Officer | Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (QLD) Ltd | Brisbane

You, First
Some roles are defined by the job. This one is defined by the person.
You may already be a legal leader in the legal assistance sector, in government or in another purpose-driven organisation. You bring the credibility of more than a decade in practice. That includes real depth in either criminal or human rights law, the breadth to guide family and civil law, and the executive maturity to lead through others.

Most importantly, you lead with humility. You know trust is earned through relationships, not title. You listen before speaking, learn before directing, and build real connections with communities, teams and stakeholders. You’re as comfortable being led as you are leading.

You and This Role
This is a leadership role, not a caseload. You’ll report to the CEO and join the Executive Team. Working through Directors of Law and Regional Managers, you’ll lead ATSILS’ statewide practice across Criminal, Family and Civil Law, Throughcare and specialist legal services.

Where you’ll make the difference:
  • Setting and lifting practice standards, so clients in every location receive high-quality, culturally competent legal assistance
  • Coaching and mentoring the leaders who manage the practice, and growing the current and future generation
  • Shaping law reform and advocacy at a State and Commonwealth level, informed by what the practice sees every day
  • Using data and evidence to improve services and meet funding obligations
  • Acting as the companies lawyer, advising the CEO and Board on governance, risk and corporate matters
  • Stepping in on the most complex and sensitive matters where your legal judgement is required
You and ATSILS
ATSILS exists to uphold and advance the legal and human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It does this through legal assistance, community legal education, advocacy and early intervention. Its values are Care, Share and Respect, and its influence reaches well beyond the courtroom, shaping justice outcomes across Queensland and nationally.

What You’ll Bring
  • 10+ years’ post-admission experience and a current Queensland Practising Certificate
  • Senior leadership of a medium to large legal practice or unit
  • A strong criminal or human rights law foundation, with working command of family and civil law
  • Confidence with data, reporting and government-funded programs
  • Strong communication and written skills, including resolving workplace issues through mediation
Where You’ll Land
  • A seat on the Executive, with influence across the whole organisation
  • Statewide leadership responsibility and real input into policy and law reform
  • The opportunity to develop current and future legal leaders
  • A purpose-driven organisation with deep community connection
