For the Public Lawyer Who Enjoys Solving Difficult Legal Questions
You enjoy getting to the heart of difficult legal questions: interpreting complex legislation, considering the limits of government power and working through issues where there is rarely an obvious answer. You may already practise in constitutional law, or have developed the public law foundations and intellectual curiosity to take your career further into this highly specialised area.
The Organisation
We are partnering with one of Australia’s leading government legal practices, advising government agencies, statutory authorities and senior decision-makers on matters of legal, strategic and public importance.
Within its specialist Constitutional Law team, lawyers advise on complex State and Commonwealth constitutional issues, the validity of legislation, statutory interpretation and matters involving Cabinet and Parliament. The team also advises the Attorney-General in constitutional matters and supports the Solicitor-General in significant litigation and advisory work.
The Timing
Opportunities currently exist for experienced lawyers to join this specialist practice as demand for sophisticated constitutional law expertise continues.
For someone already working in public law, government or complex litigation, this is an opportunity to build genuine depth in constitutional law while working alongside practitioners who operate at the forefront of the jurisdiction’s most difficult legal questions.
The Work Itself
Some of the most interesting constitutional questions arise before legislation even becomes law. You might be asked whether the State can do what it proposes to do, whether draft legislation will be constitutionally valid or how a particularly difficult provision should be interpreted. Your advice may help shape the way forward before legislation is enacted and, in some cases, that same legislation may later be tested through constitutional challenge.
The work can take you from complex statutory interpretation and questions of government power through to significant constitutional litigation, including matters involving the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General and proceedings before the High Court. With the team having acted on major challenges to Queensland legislation and advised on State and Commonwealth constitutional issues, this is work for lawyers who enjoy going deep, testing arguments from every angle and bringing clarity to legal questions where there is rarely an obvious answer.
Where You'll Land
You’ll join a collaborative specialist team where technical excellence and knowledge sharing are genuinely valued. You’ll work alongside respected practitioners, be trusted with meaningful and intellectually challenging work, and have the opportunity to develop your expertise through matters few lawyers encounter in everyday practice.
Alongside the work itself, you’ll benefit from hybrid working, no billable hour requirements and 12.75% superannuation, creating an attractive alternative to the traditional private practice model.
Sound Like You?
You’ll typically bring 5+ years’ PAE gained in government, private practice, at the Bar or in another public sector legal environment. You may already have constitutional law experience, or your background might be in an adjacent area that has given you strong foundations in complex statutory interpretation, legislative and government advisory work, public law litigation, appellate work or questions involving government power and the operation of legislation.
What matters is your ability to think deeply about difficult legal questions, write with precision and bring sound judgement to issues where the answer isn’t always obvious. Just as importantly, you’ll have a genuine interest in constitutional law and want to develop real depth in this specialist area.
