This is a 6 to 10 year PAE In-house Lawyer opportunity reporting to the Head of Legal and working closely to support the executive leadership team.

Our client is one of the largest ASX-listed retail groups in Australasia, with a 100-year history and a network of more than 300 sites across Australia and New Zealand representing many of the world's leading consumer brands. The scale brings the deal flow, the governance maturity and the regulatory complexity you'd expect of a listed business of this size, but the culture has held onto something less common at this end of the market: it still moves quickly, decisions get made, and commercial judgement is genuinely valued over process for its own sake.
The Timing
The legal team is well-established and this is a senior addition. Someone who can carry an independent workload, support more junior lawyers, and partner directly with senior stakeholders on the deals and issues that matter most. The business is active on the M&A and growth front, and the role has been shaped to give a strong generalist genuine responsibility across the portfolio.
The Work Itself
A typical week might see you negotiating a SaaS agreement rolling out across 300 sites, advising the ELT on a consumer law question that landed that morning, working through the commercial terms of a new dealer arrangement, and progressing an acquisition that's been months in the making. The next week looks different again: a property matter on a flagship site, a franchising query, an HR issue that needs a careful hand.
This is the breadth that keeps senior commercial lawyers interested. You're advising a business that buys, sells, leases, finances and employs at scale across a number of countries, so the matters land in genuine variety. External advisers handle the larger transactions alongside you, but the day-to-day commercial judgement sits with the team, and the executive leans on you and your team for the questions that don't fit neatly into a category.

Sound Like You?
A corporate/commercial lawyer with 6 to 10 years PAE, strong commercial instincts and the confidence to advise senior stakeholders independently. Breadth matters more than a specific specialty: useful exposure includes M&A, corporate, commercial, property, privacy and data, HR/IR and WHSE, ACL and franchising, finance, tax, insurance, IT/AI or ESG. In-house or ASX experience is a plus, not a prerequisite.
