This opportunity sits within a Queensland Government department responsible for delivering major programs, funding initiatives and infrastructure projects across the state.

The Legal Services team forms part of the Corporate Services division and provides independent, objective and strategic legal advice to the Director-General, senior leaders and departmental staff. The team plays a key role in supporting lawful, effective and high-quality decision-making across government.
  
Your New Role
Reporting to the Director, Legal Services, you will join a small and collegiate in-house team delivering general commercial legal services across the department.
This role has a strong focus on contracts, grants and property law, together with broader advisory responsibilities across legislation, policy and government decision-making processes.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing high-level, strategic and independent legal advice and documentation across commercial, contract and property matters
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, grant agreements, memoranda of understanding and related documentation
  • Advising and assisting departmental staff in commercial negotiations and deliberations with legal implications
  • Advising on the interpretation and application of legislation administered by the department
  • Supporting the preparation of instructions to Crown Law, private law firms and counsel
  • Reviewing and contributing to Cabinet submissions and other policy documentation
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders on matters affecting departmental operations
This is a broad, autonomous role suited to a motivated and proactive lawyer who can confidently manage competing priorities and provide clear, practical advice to senior stakeholders.

Your Skills Profile
    • 4–6 years’ PAE in commercial and/or property law;
    • Admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland;
    • Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and funding agreements;
    • Property experience, ideally including leases, licences or tenure arrangements;
    • Ability to provide independent, strategic advice to senior stakeholders;
    • Experience advising on legislative interpretation and government processes (desirable);
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships; 
    • Proactive, organised and capable of working autonomously or with light supervision; and 
    • Government experience is advantageous but not essential.
