For the Senior Litigator Ready to Apply Their Craft to Health
If you've been running health law or medical negligence files, the technical foundations are already in place. Quantum on serious injury claims. Strategic case management. Conferences, mediations, and the hearings that actually go the distance. The work that follows shouldn't ask less of you. It should ask differently.
This is a Senior Associate or Special Counsel opportunity within a national commercial firm's Health practice, working alongside two partners on civil claims, regulatory investigations, and disciplinary matters for medical defence organisations and their members.
The Firm
Long-established, national and genuinely full-service. The firm has particular depth in litigation, insurance, and government work, built up over decades of acting for major insurers, mutuals, government agencies, and corporate clients. The Health practice sits within that broader offering but operates as a specialised team with its own identity, client base, and way of working.
The Timing
The practice has grown substantially over the last 18 months and now acts for a large portion of the medical defence organisation market across Australia. The team is expanding to match that growth, and this role brings senior capability into a practice that needs it.
The Work Itself
High-value civil litigation is the centre of gravity. Professional negligence claims involving serious injury or death. Coronial inquests with regulatory consequences. Disciplinary proceedings before QCAT and the Office of the Health Ombudsman. Matters that combine the litigation rigour you already know with the regulatory and human dimensions that make health law distinct. You won't be siloed. The practice's breadth across civil, regulatory, administrative and statutory work means you'll work across the full suite, not a narrow cut of it.
Where You'll Land
Two partners invested in developing the senior lawyers around them. A team retained through significant growth, which says something about the culture. 26 weeks of paid parental leave for all staff, realistic KPIs with additional weeks of leave for exceeding targets, and flexible working without giving up your office or workspace. Career development sits within a transparent framework, salary increases aren't capped, and remuneration reflects the value you deliver.
Sound Like You?
Strong civil litigation experience at senior level, with a background in health law and medical negligence. The judgement to manage high-value claims independently. Comfort with conferences, mediations, and Court and Tribunal advocacy. A pragmatic, client-focused approach. If you've been working in health law or med neg and you're ready for a practice with genuine depth and scope, this is worth a conversation.
