This is a Senior Associate or Special Counsel opportunity within a national commercial firm’s Health practice, working alongside two partners on civil claims, regulatory investigations, and disciplinary matters for medical defence organisations and their members.
The Firm
The role sits within a long-established national commercial firm with a substantial Brisbane presence and offices in several other major Australian cities. The firm operates a full-service practice with particular depth in litigation, insurance, and government work, built up over decades of acting for major insurers, mutuals and member organisations, government agencies, and corporate clients.
The Health practice is a specialised team within that broader litigation and regulatory offering. Two partners lead the team and stay on the file. Senior lawyers see partners on the file, not at arm's length, and mentorship is built into how the team operates, not scheduled into the calendar.
The Timing
The practice has grown substantially over the last 18 months and now acts for a large portion of the medical defence organisation market across Australia. The team is expanding to match that growth, and this role brings senior capability into a practice that needs it.
The Work Itself
High-value civil litigation is the centre of gravity. Professional negligence claims involving serious injury or death. Coronial inquests with regulatory consequences. Disciplinary proceedings before QCAT and the Office of the Health Ombudsman. Matters that combine the litigation rigour you already know with the regulatory and human dimensions that make health law distinct.
You won't be siloed. The practice's breadth across civil, regulatory, administrative and statutory work means you'll work across the full suite, not a narrow cut of it.

Strong civil litigation experience at senior level, built in CTP, QGIF, general insurance defence, or plaintiff personal injury. The judgement to manage high-value claims independently. Comfort with conferences, mediations, and Court and Tribunal advocacy. A pragmatic, client-focused approach.
Health law experience is not required. The practice consistently brings lawyers across from adjacent litigation backgrounds, and the technical skills transfer directly. What matters is litigation craft and judgement.
