Tax Lawyer

Location: Brisbane

Worktype: Full Time

For the Tax Adviser Ready to Practise as a Lawyer

You've built real expertise in tax advisory. You've finished your law degree. Now you want a role that uses both — not one that treats your accounting background as a footnote or your legal qualification as a nice-to-have. You want to advise, draft, dispute and transact, with the technical depth you already have being the reason you're in the room.

This is an opportunity for an accountant with 3+ years' tax advisory experience and a completed law degree to step into a tax lawyer role, joining a highly regarded tax and tax disputes team that genuinely wants the hybrid skill set you bring.

The Firm
Our client is a leading independent Brisbane firm with a national and international client base. They are a 2024 Beaton Client Choice Award winner for best law and related services firm in their revenue category, and a 5-star Employer of Choice recognised by HRD and Australasian Lawyer. The tax and tax disputes team sits within the broader Commercial and Private Client workgroup — a full-service environment where tax advice connects directly to the transactions and disputes it informs.

The Timing
The team is actively building capability in practitioners who can bridge tax advisory and legal practice. They have structured the role around the transition itself — career progression supported by senior legal mentorship, with the expectation that your tax advisory grounding accelerates rather than delays your development as a lawyer.

The Work Itself
This is a genuinely mixed tax practice. One day you might be drafting an objection to an ATO penalty assessment, the next you're advising on the GST treatment of a commercial transaction, and the day after that you're sitting across from a state revenue office in a duties review. The work spans federal and state regimes, and moves fluidly between standalone advisory, disputes and transactional support depending on what each matter needs.

You'll see commercial deals through from advice to implementation rather than handing them off once the strategy is set, which means staying close to the detail and the client. The client base is varied: corporates, private businesses, and high-net-worth individuals, all bringing different risk profiles and different problems to solve.

Where You'll Land
A vibrant, growing team that takes its work seriously and genuinely enjoys the people doing it. Flexible work arrangements, competitive salary and a strong parental leave policy. Daily breakfast in the team café, onsite wellness facilities and classes, EAP and wellbeing initiatives. Purchased leave program, novated leasing, corporate medical insurance plans, and an active social and networking calendar.

Sound Like You?
An accountant with 3+ years in tax advisory and a completed law degree, genuinely motivated to transition into legal practice. Strong technical foundations, excellent written and verbal communication, sharp attention to detail and a real commitment to client service. Able to work independently and bring junior team members along with you.
